It could also explain some or all of the “overlap” cases you mention. With the Toran Singh case, for instance, it could be an absolute pure coincidence that he had birthmarks corresponding to the bullet wounds suffered by Suresh Verme. However, it could be that it was this very coincidence (and the geographical/temporal proximity) which gave a false “match” and led Toran Singh’s young unconscious mind to link to the record of Suresh Verme’s memories. In principle, maybe one could access the memories of living persons as well, which might be what happened in the 17 year overlap case. I think this must be rare - or more difficult to achieve – otherwise chaos would ensue! It might account for the phenomenon of telepathy but, if telepathy exists, I suppose it happens in different circumstances.MichaelHnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4608287618412195836.post-17037368450654702172016-09-11T12:48:16.514-07:002016-09-11T12:48:16.514-07:00This is a really fascinating blog. Like you, though, I have often wondered how it would be reincarnation in any meaningful sense if a completely new person comes into existence with no memories carried over from the “previous” existence. In that case, what would actually be the connection between the two lives?

I suppose if you regard reincarnation simply as a series of lives here on Earth, there would be no connection. However, theories of reincarnation usually involve a soul which spends time in another realm between incarnations. During that time, an individual might be aware of all its past existences and maybe even have some choice over the time and place of its next incarnation. But, as the quote at the top of your piece suggests, those memories would be lost while in this world (eg by drinking the “waters of Lethe” of ancient myth before reincarnation). I am not sure why it would be like this but maybe our time here is just meant to be a fully immersive experience!

Another explanation for all this could be that there is no reincarnation as such but that, to use a computer analogy, our brains are like a local hard disk but our memories (and possibly other attributes) are also recorded on a gigantic remote server - or “in the cloud” as you might say. Maybe it sometimes happens that through some glitch we can access the wrong record and retrieve memories of someone else causing us to believe that we were that person! Depending on how these cosmic records are laid out, that “someone else” is unlikely to be anyone really remote in time, space or species but more probably someone “near” in terms of history, geography or family. Moreover, it could be that a young child whose brain is still developing is more prone to these glitches than adults. Now this presumably requires us to assume another dimension (or occult realm) not visible to us, but then accepting the existence of another dimension might also go some way towards explaining other weird phenomena such as telepathy and mediumship - and even the disappearing/reappearing items you have written about in other recent posts.

I am not saying I necessarily believe any of this – it is just a suggestion!MichaelHnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4608287618412195836.post-4971392407862325672016-07-09T13:27:28.793-07:002016-07-09T13:27:28.793-07:00The point I was making is that, if rebirth occurs,...The point I was making is that, if rebirth occurs, it means that a new person has come into existence. Using the analogy of sleep, if you wake up with global amnesia, so that you can't remember anything of your old life, are you still the same person. Yes, because you can still speak the language, know and understand the world around you, possess the same IQ, and broadly speaking, the same talents, inborn and acquired, the same basic personality structure, and, of course, the same body. All of these things would change, except for some minor details, in reincarnation.Malcolm Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00672612354161787023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4608287618412195836.post-55898152980216287382016-07-06T22:27:21.153-07:002016-07-06T22:27:21.153-07:00"Philosophy 101: if you die, then come back, ..."Philosophy 101: if you die, then come back, and cannot remember your past life, how is this different from you dying and somebody else being born?" - Take the analogy of sleep. If you sleep and dream, but don't remember those dreams when you wake up, how is this different from not having dreamt at all? Evidence suggests that dreams do play a part in reinforcing memories and discovering new patterns in known facts. People report waking up with the solutions of problems that were troubling them before they slept. If rebirth & reincarnation exist (and I believe they do), the "new" person has learned from the unremembered dream of the old life - or, at least has the chance to learn (some people choose to make the same mistakes over again).

I'm sure you're right, that many people who report "reincarnation" are actually experiencing something else. I don't agree this is always the case.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4608287618412195836.post-16971384956862507972016-07-04T18:17:58.274-07:002016-07-04T18:17:58.274-07:00Makes me think of the episode "Memories"...Makes me think of the episode "Memories" in the new Twilight ZoneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
